How to Clone Your Plants: A Beginner’s Guide to Propagation

Grow smarter, grow kinder — the Mr. Nice way.

If you’ve ever grown a plant so good you wish you could grow it again exactly the same — good news: you can. Cloning is a simple, sustainable way to duplicate your best plants, preserving their genetics without starting from scratch every time.

At Mr. Nice, we believe in growing with intention, respect, and longevity. Learning to clone your cannabis plants is one of the smartest ways to deepen your relationship with your grow — and extend the legacy of your favorite strains.

Here’s how to get started.

What is Cloning, and Why Should You Try It?

Cloning (aka propagation) means taking a cutting from a “mother” plant and encouraging it to grow roots and develop into an exact genetic replica. No guessing, no seed germination — just consistency.

Why clone?

  • Save money: One healthy plant can produce dozens of clones.
  • Preserve genetics: Lock in that perfect terpene profile or high-yield pheno.
  • Faster turnaround: Clones bypass the seedling stage and grow faster than starting from seed.
  •

This method is ideal for indoor growers who want control, consistency, and quality in their garden.

What You’ll Need

  • Healthy mother plant (at least 2 months old, pest-free)
  • Sterile scissors or razor blade
  • Rooting hormone (gel, powder, or liquid)
  • Grow medium (rockwool cubes, peat plugs, or coco coir)
  • Humidity dome or propagation tray
  • Spray bottle with pH-balanced water
  • Grow light (preferably a low-intensity LED or T5 fluorescent)

Step-by-Step: How to Clone Your Cannabis Plant

1. Choose the Right Mother

Pick a vigorous, pest-free plant that’s at least 2 months into vegetative growth. Avoid flowering plants — they’re harder to clone successfully.

Mr. Nice Tip: If you’re growing one of our classics like Shark Shock or Critical Mass, cloning is a great way to keep those genetics going strong.

2. Make the Cut

Using sterile scissors, cut a 4–6 inch branch at a 45° angle just below a node (where the leaf meets the stem). Choose branches that are strong but flexible.

3. Prepare the Clone

  • Trim lower leaves, leaving 1–2 sets near the top.
  • Gently scrape the bottom of the stem to expose more rooting area.
  • Dip the cut end into rooting hormone immediately.

4. Place in Medium

Insert your cutting into your chosen grow medium (rockwool, peat plug, etc.). Make sure it’s snug — you want it supported but not strangled.

5. Humidity & Light

  • Place clones under a humidity dome with 70–80% humidity.
  • Mist daily and keep them under 18–24 hours of low-intensity light.
  • Ideal temps: 70–78°F (21–25°C)

Roots should form in 7–14 days. Be patient — some strains take longer than others.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Wilting clone? You may have too much or too little humidity.
  • Mold? Reduce moisture and increase airflow.
  • No roots after 2 weeks? Try a fresh cutting or double-check your lighting and medium.

When to Transplant

Once roots are about 2 inches long and strong, you can transplant your clone into its final home — soil, hydro, or coco. Be gentle. These roots are still new to the world.

Grow With Intention

Cloning isn’t just a grow hack — it’s a way to carry forward the genetics you love. It reflects what Mr. Nice stands for: cultivating quality, consistency, and care. Whether you’re keeping a legendary pheno alive or preserving something personal, propagation is an act of love and legacy.

So clip with care, plant with purpose, and watch what happens when you grow something worth repeating.
